Operation of God

Then Peter said unto them,
1) Repent,
2) and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
3) and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

1) Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death:
2) that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
3) even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Baptism by Immersion

"Our word "baptize" is translated from the original Greek word "baptizo", which means to immerse. 

"Baptizo" does not mean sprinkle or pour. 

--If our Lord had wanted people to be sprinkled, he would have inspired the New Testament writers to use the Greek word "rhantizo". 

--If our Lord wanted people to be poured He would have inspired New Testament writers to use the Greek word "katacheo".

Q&A on Matthew 3:16:

And Jesus, when He was baptized - Christ, when He was baptized by John in the river Jordan, the place where he was baptizing,
went up straightway out of the water.

Evangelist should relate this circumstance; for after the ordinance was administered, 

Q: why should He stay in the water? 

Q: what should He do there? 

---Everyone would naturally and reasonably conclude, without the mention of such a circumstance, that as soon as his baptism was over, He would immediately come up out of the water. 

---However, we learn this from it, that since it is said, that He came up out of the water, He must first have gone down into it; must have been in it, and was baptized in it;

Baptism by Sprinkling?

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 

2 Timothy 4:3-4

"But we then ask the question, 

Q: where then did sprinkling or pouring come from? 

A: The first recorded case in all of early church history was that of Novatian in 251 AD, who lay sick on his bed and water was poured on him. 

Q: Who made this first exception, man or God? ....God has not approved of it. 

Sprinkling is just as vain

 as if it had never been done.

This man made exception over the centuries became the man made accepted practice until at the Council of Ravenna in 1311 AD, man legalized sprinkling for baptism, but without God's authority."

Infant Baptism?

Baptism of the Dead?

Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead?

If the dead are not raised at all,
why then are they baptized for them?
1 Corinthians 15:29
"Just north of Corinth was a city named Eleusis. 

This was the location of a pagan religion where baptism in the sea was practiced to guarantee a good afterlife. 

This religion was mentioned by Homer in Hymn to Demeter 478-79.
The Corinthians were known to be heavily influenced by other customs.
*It is probable that the Corinthians were being influenced by the religious practices found at Eleusis where baptism for the dead was practiced.

Paul used this example from the pagans when he said, " . . . if the dead are not raised, then why are they baptized for the dead?" 

Paul did not say we.

*This is significant because the Christian church was not practicing baptism for the dead, but the pagans were.
Paul's point was simple. 

--The resurrection is a reality. 

--It is going to happen when Jesus returns. 

--Even the pagans believe in the resurrection, otherwise, why would they baptize for the dead?"

SUMMARY:

1) CRUCIFIED WITH HIM- Knowing this, that our old man is

crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 

2) BURIED WITH HIM- Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: 

3) RISEN WITH HIM- ...that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
